Esha's Talk Published at TED.com

Ever since the release of my first album, ‘Beautiful’ in 2016, I have been working really hard to spread a message of healing through music. In addition, it’s been important to me to address the stigma behind neurological disorders and mental illness.

As a person with Tourette Syndrome, I struggle daily with the symptoms and consequences of the disorder. I feel certain there are many people around the world who feel the same way and I want to put forth an alternate way in which they might find healing. I found a way to soothe my symptoms through music. Ever since my diagnosis, music has held me up through my best and worst days

This past year, I was invited to present a talk about my healing experiences with music. I am so very honored and grateful to announce that my TED-Ed speech, ‘Compose Yourself’ has been selected for inclusion on the official TED Website. This is a dream come true! I can’t thank TED enough for giving me the platform to share my story and spread my message.

A video of my speech has been uploaded on the website and is now viewable at this link:
go.ted.com/eshaalwani

In addition to thanking TED, I would like my to thank my Team for helping me reach this point. And of course all of you for supporting me and encouraging me to keep pursuing my music. I’m so excited to be able to share this with all of you. I hope that it inspires healing in your life and that you can find some importance in the message.

I’d like to extend a special thank you to Saint Andrew’s School and my 9th grade advisor Ms.Lisa Winer, for giving me the very first opportunity to talk about my syndrome on a TED platform.

Please share this video with your family and friends, (I hope that they too can find something in the talk that speaks to them). Leave a comment to let me know your thoughts!
Thank you for all the love and support.
Stay Beautiful,
Esha xx

LIKES & SHARES are appreciated.

Esha Alwani began writing songs when she was six years old, shortly after being diagnosed with Tourette syndrome. And she noticed something amazing: whenever she played music, her involuntary tics suddenly went away. Listen along as Alwani explores the power of music and delights the audience with an ethereal performance of her piano ballad "I'm Not Loving You (My Mask)."

The Gully Boy

nature-3047449__480.jpg

Film and media is one of the most effective ways to portray a message to the general public, especially in this generation. Recently, I watched the Bollywood Film ‘Gully Boy’ (translates to street boy), which focuses on the story of a man from the slums who finds a passion for music and fights to achieve his goals. Throughout his journey different social issues are presented in a manner that really allows the viewer to question the separation between genders, social classes, and personal dreams. Without giving too much away, I’d like to highlight three aspects of the film that captured my attention and set this movie apart from all other Bollywood films I’ve seen in the past.

  1. The Liver Transplant Comment

Like almost every other society, the role of the Indian woman is most commonly defined by mother, wife, daughter, and housekeeper. Traditionally, women are expected to, most importantly, be able to cook for their husbands and their families. However, the movie ‘Gully Boy’ pushes the boundaries and introduces a female character who is more interested in her medical career than in playing the traditional role of a woman. When asked if she knows how to cook, the girl calmly responds “No, but if everything goes well I can do your liver transplant some day.” This simple comment alone, challenges traditional expectations of women and shows support for the women who have different dreams or goals.

2. The Emphasis on Limits That Exist Because of Social Constructs

Like many other communities, there is a stark and very visible line between the poor and the wealthy in India. According to the Washington Post, a recent study shows that India has about 70.6 million people living in poverty and is number two on the list of countries with the most poor people in the world. And while the Indian government is taking steps towards eradicating the poverty, the greatest divide often exists in the people themselves. The movie puts forth the argument that just because someone is born into a poorer family it doesn’t meant they’re any less capable than someone born wealthy. It just means that they have less opportunity because of the way that society has structured itself. The protagonist Murad, played by Ranveer Singh, validates this message many times during the movie and finally announces that he will ‘change [his] reality to match [his] dream.”

3. The songs!!

The storyline of the movie itself was about a rapper from the Gully (streets) who had a dream to make it big. The songs in the movie were so unique! The messages were so powerful and inspiring and they focused not only on different social issues that exist in India, but also encouraged people to go out and chase their dreams! The songs weren’t presented in the popular, lavish way that often exists in other Bollywood films. Instead the presentation was simple, eye-opening and extremely meaningful.

I applaud the team of the movie for releasing such a well thought-out film. If you haven’t seen the movie yet, I suggest you do. And if you have seen it and would like to share your favorite things about the film please feel free to drop a comment! (no spoilers please!) I love hearing from you and am super excited about this movie and the way they use music to portray the important messages they wanted to send to the public. 100% recommended!

The Journey Continues for Pop Artist Esha Alwani

This is a fantastic write up from "When in Aruba"  www.wheninaruba.com

IMG_3034.PNG

By Debbie Kunder

I have known local singer-songwriter Esha Alwani since she first learned how to add fractions. As her math tutor, I had the pleasure of getting to know Esha as a young, sensitive girl, who between dividing decimals and rounding off numbers, would announce that she was working on the lyrics of a new song for her fledgling band, the Golden Guitars. I was also there when the tics began, only mild at first. Then they increased in severity, sometimes taking control of her entire body, and my heart broke as I witnessed Esha struggling with Tourette’s syndrome physically, mentally, emotionally, and socially.

Then Esha moved with her family to Boca Raton, Florida, and I lost touch with her for a few years. It was in Boca Raton, during her middle school years, that Esha delved deeper into songwriting as a way to cope with the challenges posed by her disorder. Her musical talents also began to thrive during this period, enabling her to bring life to her poetry through piano, guitar, and her beautiful voice. As she captured her struggles and all the emotions that went with them in her melodies and lyrics, music became her therapy, her creative outlet, and she began to heal.

After performing her original song “Beautiful” at her eighth-grade graduation, Esha posted the performance on her Facebook page, which she planned to use as a vehicle for her message, “Music is My Therapy.” Her initial plan was that her music would simply be a way to encourage people to find what they love and let it save them. The Universe had a bit more in store for her. The video of the performance made its way to the desk of producer Kim Copeland, who in turn invited Esha to Nashville in March 2016 to record her first album, Beautiful.

In her social column, Island Temptations’ PR & special project director, Rona Coster, wrote, “Every one of the six songs on the EP is a compact, nicely worked out insight, and the string of songs together clearly narrates Esha’s journey from darkness and confusion to light and creativity.” I couldn’t say it better myself. When I heard the tracks for the first time after Esha returned to Aruba in June 2016, I couldn’t believe that the clear, confident voice I was hearing was coming from the same girl who had once been so vulnerable and broken. I still get chills every time I listen to the album.

Since the recording of Beautiful, Esha has racked up an impressive list of performances, delighting audiences at the Best of Aruba (April 2016), Caribbean Sea Jazz Festival (September 2016), Aruba Fashion Week (December 2016), and a handful of other events and venues. In September 2016, she rolled out her first music video, produced by Matt Lawrence from Push Focus Productions. For the video, she chose her favorite song from the Beautiful album, “Yesterday,” as it carries a universal message that most people can connect to—how we can fix our mistakes to mend the past.

As the therapeutic balm of Esha’s music eased her tics and infused her with a newfound strength, her journey naturally took a new direction, and in June 2017, Esha proudly released her second album, Dangerous. Whereas Beautiful is a collection of introspective ballads, Dangerous is more fun and upbeat. “I wanted Dangerous to be more uplifting, more positive, more empowering,” Esha shares. “I feel really strong and confident now, which comes through in the album. I’m dangerous, but in a positive way. I’m bolder now—I know what I want, and I know what I need to do to get it.” In other words, she’s growing up.

Esha unveiling her Dangerous album cover at the album launch party, Aruba.

The album is dangerous in another way. In Beautiful, Esha focuses on loving and healing herself, but in Dangerous, she focuses on loving other people, “mostly in a romantic way,” she clarifies with a cheeky smile. Esha has had her fair share of crushes, and many of her Dangerous songs contain her real feelings about real people—amplified feelings, she explains, but real none the less. “It’s like I’m opening up my diary to the people I’ve written about, my crushes, and that’s a bit dangerous,” Esha so endearingly explains.

Esha admits that the vulnerable ballads are her favorite songs to sing, so it’s not surprising that at least one of the seven songs on the Dangerous album,“I’m Not Loving You,” carries hints of vulnerability. “You know how sometimes we wear a mask to hide our true selves when we meet someone new? This song is about fearing that we’ve taken off the mask too soon.”

Esha gave her biggest performance yet at the Aruba Summer Music Festival, which took place on the island June 30–July 1 at the Harbor Square Arena. She shared the stage with big names like Juan Luis Guerra, Gilberto Santa Rosa, Maluma, Silvestre Dangond, and Zion & Lennox. Esha shares, “It was a big dream of mine to perform at Harbor Arena. I used to drive past the venue and announce to my dad that I would perform there one day. That dream has come true.” Esha rounded out the year with a performance at the Caribbean Sea Jazz Festival in September and a performance at the legendary Bluebird Cafe in Nashville in October.

For as long as I’ve known Esha, she has always wanted to help others and make them happy. So while I can’t wait to see where Esha’s constantly evolving journey takes her next, I have no doubt that there will always be some element of inspiring others, spreading positivity, joy, and love. She ultimately hopes that people will follow her journey so they will be motivated to follow their own dreams. In my eyes, for this alone, she’s already made it big.

Music Is My Therapy

Music Is My Therapy (Facebook.com/eshamusictherapy)

When I was seven years old I was diagnosed with Tourette Syndrome, a neurological disorder that causes me to make involuntary movements and sounds. I had a hard time coming to terms with the fact that I was ‘different’. Little seven year old me hardly understood why I couldn’t control my eyes from clenching and my arms from flailing around. I couldn’t concentrate, I couldn’t sit in a desk, and I couldn’t take a test without disturbing everyone in the room.

However, it was during this time, that I began to realize the effect that music had on me and my Tourette. Music quickly became my best friend.

Since before my diagnosis, my mom and I would write poems together every night, but it wasn’t until after my diagnosis that they started holding a real importance in my life. Initially, I wrote about princesses, puppies, and trees, but as I experienced more through my diagnosis, the topics became deeper. Eventually they turned into songs. I found that when I did something music related, my symptoms would lessen and quite often disappear. Writing songs started becoming more than just a hobby to me; it became my medicine and it became my therapy.

I realized that writing gave me the perfect opportunity to get out all my emotions and express how I was feeling and what I was going through in a way that people would want to listen. At the age of twelve I wrote ‘Beautiful’, a song about true, inner beauty. The song was not a place I was at, at the time, but it became my mantra. It was a song I wrote for myself, to remind myself what beauty really was.

As I’ve gotten older and have written more songs, I realize that my Tourette is actually a blessing in disguise. With the help of music I’ve able to better understand that this disorder I have, is just a small part of me. I’ve started understanding that there is more to me than my diagnosis. I’ve begun to see myself as a talented, smart, beautiful young girl who can heal herself through her music.

My parents, seeing my dedication and eagerness to make change and share my music, took me to Nashville to record my first album Beautiful. This album is a personal diary. Each song on the record is about my struggles with Tourette Syndrome and the things that it has taught me. I hope that through my music, people who are in similar situations will feel understood and empowered.

I always thought my Tourette would hold me back but in the end it was what started this whole thing that made my dream come true. I was five years old when I made microphones out of cardboard and sang karaoke to an imaginary crowd of people. Flash forward 11 years and I’m living the dream I never thought I would achieve. Today If you ask me what I’m most grateful to have in my life, I’ll say my Tourette Syndrome and I’ll mean it. It’s made me stronger, it’s taught me my greatest life lessons, and it is the reason I am where I am today.

I started ‘Music is My Therapy’ page in June 2015. Up till now, it’s simply been the part of my music career that donates sales of CD’s to foundations like the Tourette Association of America and the Autism Foundation of Aruba. Now, It’s time to give the idea wings.

I’m creating this official Facebook page in hopes that it will inspire people experiencing life challenges to find what they love and let it save them.

Music affects us all and for some of us with personal challenges, we might find that it is magical and therapeutic. I would love to hear some of your stories about the healing power of music in your life. If you would like to share your experiences please send it to me by email on musictherapy@eshaofficial.com

This was the beginning of my story; I hope you can make it the beginning of yours.

Stay Beautiful,

Esha xx

2017 Caribbean Sea Jazz Festival

This past September 16th, I performed at the annual Caribbean Sea Jazz Festival in Aruba. About a year ago, (during the ‘Beautiful’ Era) I was invited to play in the Art Gallery of the Festival. It was my first opportunity to take part in a music festival and I was ecstatic. For that performance, I stood in the corner of the Art Gallery with my guitar singing covers and original songs while people moved about, made conversation, and admired the artwork. In that performance I was not the center of attention, I was the background music. However, I remember walking out of the gallery that night feeling something I had never felt before. In that particular performance my show had really been about "the music". I remember seeing people move their heads with the grooves I was playing or tap their foot to the rhythm. My performance had a completely different feel to it then my previous performances had.

Since then, every performance I’ve had, I’ve tried to make it center around the music. My actions while I sing, the things that I say in between songs; I wanted everything I did to make the music more impactful and relatable. This year at the Caribbean Sea Jazz Festival, I was given an amazing opportunity to do just that. The organizers kindly invited me again, and this time I was on a big stage with bright lights and my own band, Live Xpressions . My team, the band, and I all worked really well together to put on, what I thought came out as, a great show!!

I had so much fun on that stage, and just like the previous time, I felt like the Caribbean Sea Jazz Festival gave me the opportunity to put my music in the spotlight and allow people to interpret and enjoy it. I thank them for giving me the experience and for supporting "the music".

I look forward to my upcoming shows and seeing some of you there!!

Until Next Time, Stay Beautiful !

Esha - Island Temptation Magazine

Recently so many amazing opportunities have crossed my path.

Since the release of my second EP ‘Dangerous’, I’ve been busy with a press conference that officially launched the EP, radio tours, my debut concert at Aruba Summer Music Festival, and lots of promotional meetings! Aruba had been extremely supportive of my music, and has given me many amazing chances to share my music and my message!

One of my most recent interviews with the local Aruban magazine, ‘Island Temptations’, was featured in their July edition! The article is written by a dear friend of mine, who understands me and understands my music, so I feel like it definitely captured the message I was trying to get across!

I’m so excited for my upcoming shows at Manic Monday on August 28th and Caribbean Sea Jazz Festival on September 16! I look forward to seeing some of you there!

Esha - Aruba Summer Music Festival July 1, 2017

The week before the show was full of preparation, dress rehearsals, and final touches. After four months of eating, sleeping, and breathing Aruba Summer Music Festival, I finally got to see the stage two days before the actual performance. As I walked onto the stage and looked at the empty space ahead of me, I tried to picture what the venue would look like at night with spotlights, bright screens, and thousands of screaming fans. However nothing I pictured in my mind lived up to the actual beauty and experience of the real night.

I spent all of Saturday fidgeting and looking at the clock. I can safely say that it was the LONGEST day of my life. Even though part of me was nervous about being on such a big stage with so many people watching, the other part just wanted to get on that stage and have some fun!

When I reached Harbor Arena on the big night, I was wearing a thick sweater despite the Caribbean heat. My heart was racing and my ears were pounding as I climbed up the stairs to the stage wings. I waited in the wings for what felt like an eternity but was really only about 5 minutes.

Suddenly I heard my intro video play and every cell in my body shook with excitement and nerves. I heard the introduction of my song “I Don’t Need You” and the supportive cheers from the audience. I stood in my position, the spotlights went on, and I sang the first note of my song.

To be honest, everything from there to the final bow of my show was a blur. I remember important key points like the audience putting their flashlights in the air. I remember seeing familiar faces in the crowd, but not exactly registering them until much later. I remember the feeling of singing to 8,000 people and hearing them sing back to me. I remember finishing my set and hearing my island cheer for me.

I’ve been alive for 15 years and I am lucky to have experienced many amazing and thrilling moments in my life, but out of every experience I have ever had so far, none has ever compared to the one I had on July 1, 2017. It wasn’t just about being able to sing before well respected artists like Maluma and Zion y Lennox and it wasn’t just about the number of people in the crowd. The night was amazing for me because I felt like everything I had worked for for the past few years was fitting together so perfectly.

International Day of Yoga

Happy International Day of Yoga!

To celebrate this day, and mark the importance of chanting energy as a tool to awaken peace on our planet, I was invited to lead the chanting of the peace mantra. I gratefully accepted knowing that this would be an excellent way for me to connect with my Indian heritage. However, not only was I able to share my culture and connect with my cultural roots, I was able realize first hand how powerful chanting can be.

Chanting the mantra helped me feel peaceful yet energetic and aligned me to my goals, a valuable resource during my busy days preparing for upcoming festivals. I encourage you, especially today, to find some time for yourself and allow yourself to be peaceful! In a world where our lives are so busy and hectic making time to find peace and giving yourself the chance to connect with your surroundings is a practice worth trying. I am extremely grateful to Prana Aruba for helping me find my peace. I hope this video can help you find yours!

Stay Peaceful and Stay Beautiful,

Esha - Ed Sheeran - Divide (@edsheeranmusic)

Ed Sheeran

Ed Sheeran

Yesterday, Ed Sheeran released his third studio album, Divide. Ed is an amazingly talented singer-songwriter who somehow manages to make each of his songs so unique yet maintain his Sheeran style in all of them. I’ve always been a huge fan of his music, not just because his songs are catchy, but also because his lyrics are so powerful, beautiful and touching. After listening to the album just once, I was in love. Here’s a list of my top songs from the album!

Dive: This song is so different from songs Ed usually writes, and I love it! It has such a cool feel to it. I think this one might be my absolute favorite on the album. It’s so melodically beautiful and catchy. I love the way Ed Sheeran tries different styles in this album, but at the same time stays true to his authentic sound!

Perfect: This is the most beautiful love song ever! It melts my heart. The lyrics and emotion in Ed’s voice make the song. The energy in this song is beautiful. It would be the perfect wedding song!

Happier: This song is so sad but so amazing! Ed really captures the attitude of this song well. The instrumentation, lyrics, and the way he delivers the song all come together to give me serious goosebumps.

Picking favorites from this album was so difficult. All the songs are so well-written! If you haven’t already, you should definitely listen to the album!

Leave a comment to let me know what you think, and what your favorite Ed songs are! You can also check out my music video for my original song “Yesterday”, released a few months ago. You can find it on my YouTube channel or right here on my website! The views have been climbing quickly and I’m extremely grateful to everyone who has viewed it and shared it.

My new album will be released very soon. Be sure to "like' my Facebook Page to keep up with the progress

Esha to Nashville Feb 2017

This week, I will be in Nashville, Tennessee, recording my second EP. I’ve been working on these new songs since the release of ‘Beautiful’ and I’m really excited to share them with you soon.

The past few months have been busy with song selection, writing, last minute touch-ups and instrumentation, and I can hardly believe that it’s time to go back to studio for the final recordings. This EP has a different attitude to it and I’m really excited to capture that in studio.

Usually when I write songs I write them in the privacy of my room. But with this EP, my producer Kim Copeland and I, wrote songs in places that would inspire us- like the beaches in Aruba! It was a new experience for me, but helped me become a bolder writer.

I can’t wait to share my new music with you. I hope you’ll love it as much as I do! Stay tuned for updates on the EP! Thank you all so much for your support.

Ariana Grande - Dangerous Woman

This February, Ariana Grande starts the American leg of her tour for her newest album, “Dangerous Woman”. For those of you who don’t know, when it comes to music, Ariana is my biggest role model. Her talent and her confidence on stage is motivational and inspirational. I always admire the way she can sing such high notes, and her ability to hold them out for so long. When she released “Dangerous Woman”, it quickly became my favorite album. Every single song is just so catchy. Here are my top 3 favorite songs off the album:

Leave me Lonely: Leave me Lonely, featuring Macy Gray, is my favorite song on the entire album. The melody is so addictive that I find myself humming it all day. I also really like Macy Gray’s part. I feel like it adds to the song, and definitely makes it stand out on the Album. Love, love, love!

Sometimes: This song is just so fun, and it gets you hooked as soon as it starts. And, as always, Ariana’s vocals are flawless. I constantly have this song on repeat, it’s on all my playlists, and I’m not even close to tired of it.

Jason’s Song (Gave it Away): I always knew Ariana’s voice was amazing but I never actually realized how amazing. This song isn’t technically on “Dangerous Woman”…It’s a bonus track. Regardless, I’m blown away every time I listen to it. I especially love the empowering lyrics that remind listeners to, as Ari says, “get the hell away from those who block my vision.”

If you haven’t listened to Ariana Grande’s “Dangerous Woman”, I suggest you do. You definitely won’t regret it. Let me know which Ariana songs are your favorite! You can also check out my music video for my original song “Yesterday”, released only a few months ago. You can find it on my YouTube channel or right here on my website! The views have been climbing quickly and I’m extremely grateful to everyone who has viewed it and shared it.

Music has become such an important part of my life. Listening to music and writing music have taught me to understand my emotions and accept them. Music has made it possible for me to share my thoughts, rather than just keeping them to myself. My happiness derives from being able to create something that other people can hopefully resonate with, and connect to. Music has helped me preserver through tough times, and has given me an opportunity to find myself. I encourage all of you to find what you love and let it save you! Music is my therapy, what’s yours?

From Esha 1/1/17 - Resolutions

With the end of 2016, it’s now time to sit down and think about what we did this year and how we can strive to be better in 2017. Every year my family and I sit together just before the new year and write resolutions. While I have my major resolutions like working to be a better musician, student, and person, I also have some smaller ones.

  1. Cut down on Sour Patch Kids: I must admit; I’m a Sour Patch Kids addict! Whenever I go to the movie theaters this is my treat (or whenever I’m bored, hungry, or basically any time of day), and it doesn’t matter how many times I tell myself I won’t finish the packet, because I always finish the packet! And so, that’s why this coming year in 2017, I’m going to challenge myself to eat less Sour Patch Kids. Believe me this will be a challenge.

2. Spend more time reading and less time longing for McDreamyFor those of you who aren’t aware of the existence of the one and only Derek Shepard, he is one of my favorite doctors on the TV show Grey’s Anatomy”. Even though I’m a couple seasons behind and still catching up, binge watching in 2017 isn’t going to do me any good. I need to start a new book. Maybe the writer of Grey’s Anatomy also wrote a book… I’ll have to look into that.

3. Couch to Cardio: This is something I put on my resolution every year, and always fail to do, but this year I’m positive I can accomplish it. I’m going to get off my couch and get some exercise. Even though I much rather sit inside and spend time playing my piano, I know that putting aside a few hours a week to exercise is important.

These are three resolutions that I’m going to try to accomplish in 2017! Do you have any resolutions for the New Year? I’d love to hear them! You can comment them below!

Have a Happy New Year and Stay Beautiful!
